Avian malaria caused by Plasmodium has negative effects on tissues and organs, in addition to altering the life cycle of birds. In Colombia, migratory and resident birds infected by Plasmodium have been recorded, but knowledge about these associations is limited and fragmented. In the department of Caldas, a region with high bird diversity, the diversity of Plasmodium in wild birds is unknown. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the diversity and prevalence of Plasmodium in neotropical migratory and resident birds in the inter-Andean valleys of the Cauca and Magdalena rivers. Wild birds were captured in six localities and blood samples were taken. Parasites of the genus Plasmodium were identified by morphological and molecular analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and the prevalence of Plasmodium in the birds examined was calculated. A total of 257 birds (108 species) were examined, with a Plasmodium prevalence of 6.61% (n = 17). Fourteen species of wild resident (n = 10) and neotropical migratory (n = 7; Vireo olivaceus, Catharus minimus, Catharus ustulatus, Parkesia noveboracensis, Piranga rubra and Piranga olivacea) birds tested positive for Plasmodium. Eleven Plasmodium lineages were found, including three new lineages. This is the first study of the presence of parasites of the genus Plasmodium in wild resident and migratory birds in the inter-Andean valleys of the department of Caldas, Colombia.
