eng:El Escondido volcanos is a monogenetic volcano located in the Cordillera Central in the northeast of the Caldas department, Colombia. This volcano is located with the Selva de Florencia National Natural Park and is part of the Samaná Monogenetic Volcanic Field (SMVF), which is located in the northern part of the San Diego – Cerro Machín Volcano-Tectonic Province (SCVTP). The morphology of El Escondido, in addition to the type of products emitted, allows it to be classified as a pyroclastic cone-type volcano. The volcaniclastic deposits of El Escondido volcano reveal a spectrum of pyroclastic density current deposits (i.e. concentrated and dilute), as well as secondary volcaniclastic deposits (i.e lahars) that allow interpreting its eruptive history. The characterization of its products, through various compositional and textural analyses show mineralogical chemical and morphological differences between the fragments involved in the eruption. A remnant of a dome present in the southern limit of the volcano, also shows a volcanic structure prior to the formation of the volcano. The analyzes of the products show that both magmatic and phreatomagmatic fragmentation were part of the eruptive process. Thus, an evolutionary model for El Escondido volcano is proposed, which contemplates the opening of a crater near the pre-existing dome structure and the continuity of its formation from magmatic and phreatomagmatic eruptions associated whit the intermittent interaction of magma whit a confined aquifer associated with the igneous-metamorphic basement in which the volcanos was located. Currently, the volcanic edifice is a remnant of the initially formed pyroclastic cone, due to the denudative processes associated with the very humid climatic conditions in the region, which causes, among other things, the collapse of the southern flank. spa::Resumen en español (obligatorio, 200 palabras) El volcán El Escondido es un volcán monogenético que se localiza en la Cordillera Central al nororiente del departamento de Caldas, Colombia.
