The Baroque, cultural system that was considered for a long time as a decadent art and which is constituent component of Latin American historical reality, is an integral variant of idiosyncrasy and identity. Knowing and understanding it is, doubtlessly, an obligatory passage to get to know us better. The Baroque, when it comes to religion, is fundamentally an instrument for the propagation and articulation of faith and, at the same time, to build and regulate a new faith. At the civil level, the situation is more complex: on the one hand, one finds the official sector of the ‘institutions’: the role of the king or his representatives, the role of the ‘notables’ representing the aforementioned royal power, the public bodies (general captaincy, audience, municipalities, etc.). For these institutions, the baroque plays a double role: in the representation and in the affirmation of the public power. On the other hand, at the private level the baroque is thought from a certain sacredness and hierarchy.
