Cartilla: protocolo bienestar animal en producciones ovinas
Cartilla
2024-02-28
Currently, sheep livestock production in Colombia has been developed through artisanal, extensive animal management practices and with different levels of technology. One of the most relevant aspects is animal welfare due to its implications on health, productivity and the quality of the products obtained (meat, milk, wool). Sheep production has been characterized by helping to guarantee the food security of families, the small-scale economy and sheep health schemes in a practical way, largely forgetting actions that help improve the well-being of the animals, the interactions with the handlers or operators, in order to optimize the productivity of the livestock and the profitability for the sheep farmers themselves. Colombian health legislation through the public policies of the Ministry of Agriculture, today, has been able to establish regulations that adjust and achieve well-being management practices for animals in the agricultural sector, including sheep production. There are associations. such as the Marulanda-Caldas cooperative where production processes in meat and wool have been observed, which have contributed significantly to the advancement of the region and the department of Caldas in the sheep farming sector in recent years. This is thanks to the introduction of new breeds, improvement in health standards, technology, and the increase in demand for products of this species. However; Despite the current existence of projects in Colombian agriculture aimed at improving sheep production with technology and producer training, fundamental applications such as animal welfare and human-animal interaction continue to be omitted, something that has been carried out for some time. years ago in regions such as Europe and North America, driven by consumer preferences that demand ethical and sustainable production with animals. Therefore, the importance of guiding producers through this booklet, which will contain basic and objective information related to the behavior of sheep, how they should be managed and the importance of implementing animal welfare in routine production practices in order to that the consumer obtains a quality final product, the producer generates more profitability and the animals are handled without stress or abuse.
