After mosquitoes, they are considered the second vector of diseases for human health and the main vector in animal health. In Colombia, the presence of 58 species of ticks (15 Argasidae and 43 Ixodidae) has been documented, however, some authors have reported controversial species that require confirmation of their identification. To consolidate the knowledge of the hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) of Colombia, a systematic review of the records and tick-host associations documented between January 1911 and February 2023 was carried out. To complement the information and confirm the presence of controversial species, a review of ticks deposited in different ectoparasite collections in Colombia was carried out. With these records, the distribution of hard tick species in the country and their interactions with vertebrate hosts were evaluated. Ticks were identified by morphological analysis and when possible, species were verified by evaluation and comparisons of the 16S rRNA gene. The literature review yielded 822 records of 51 hard tick species and two complexes, mostly associated with birds and mammals (101 and 504 records respectively), and to a lesser extent reptiles with 60 reports, and amphibians with only two records. In addition, 31 cases of hard ticks parasitizing humans, including species of medical and veterinary importance such as Amblyomma mixtum, Amblyomma patinoi, Rhipicephalus microplus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato, widely distributed in the country. The new records correspond to distribution extensions of six species of the genus Amblyomma in seven departments of Colombia. Finally, four new tick associations with wild mammals were documented, including Procyon cancrivorus, Pudu mephistophiles and Tamandua mexicana. The distribution and interaction network analyses reveal that three species of hard ticks of medical and veterinary importance such as Amblyomma cajennense s.l., R. sanguineus s.l. and R. microplus are among the most widely distributed ticks in the country and are mainly associated with domestic hosts. Likewise, two species also widely distributed in Colombia are among the hard ticks species that parasitize a wider range of wild hosts, such as Amblyomma dissimile (13 reptile species, seven bird species and one mammal) and Amblyomma longirostre (21 bird species). Meanwhile, the ten Ixodes species and the two Haemaphysalis species have more restricted distributions in the country and were limited to a smaller number of hosts. The results of the evaluation of the distribution of ticks show the lack of studies and records in the Amazon and Orinoco regions of Colombia.
