Understanding hummingbird-plant interactions in highly sensitive ecosystems such as the páramos, from an ecological and evolutionary perspective, is a key aspect in the management and conservation of protected areas. Buffy Helmetcrest (Oxypogon stuebelii) is a high mountain hummingbird restricted almost entirely to the limits of Los Nevados National Park in the central Andes of Colombia. Due to its restricted distribution, it has been categorized as a nationally and internationally threatened species; however, basic aspects of its biology, such as habitat use, are unknown. By means of palynological identification of samples taken from the head, beak and throat, the preference of plants visited and the foraging strategy of O. stuebelii was evaluated. The change in floral phenology was evaluated in three different seasons to compare resource availability with the foraging behavior of the hummingbird. We found a preference for plants of the Asteraceae family, especially the species Pentacalia vaccinioides and Pentacalia vernicosa, and a change in foraging strategy especially by males from territorial to roosting when resource availability changed. This information is key to identify the degree of sensitivity of the species, based on its habitat use, and to direct conservation strategies focused on the specific requirements of highly threatened species.eng
