| spa |
dc.description.abstract | eng:Raccoons (genus Procyon) are a group of charismatic carnivorous mammals naturally distributed in America and with introduced populations of some species in various parts of the world. Three different species are currently recognized, i) the Cozumel raccoon, Procyon pygmaeus Merriam, 1901 endemic to the island of Cozumel, Mexico, ii) the common raccoon, P. lotor (Linnaeus, 1758), and iii) the crab-eater racoon, P. cancrivorus (G. Cuvier, 1798) whose distribution is wider in Central and South America. In particular, P. cancrivorus is distributed from Costa Rica to Argentina, while P. lotor is considered to be found from Canada to Panama, including some offshore islands; Furthermore, it has been introduced in several European and Asian countries. However, for P. lotor historical records from Colombia, in the northern corner of South America, have not been considered in recent compilations on the distribution of the species and it has been discarded as a component of the South American fauna. To help clarify the information on the distribution of P. lotor in South America, recent records of the species in Colombia are presented, and additional morphometric comparisons are provided to validate its presence on the continent. The results indicate that P. lotor is distributed in 4 ecoregions in northern Colombia, while P. cancrivorus has a broader distribution in the country. Both species are clearly distinguishable by external and morphometric characteristics such as the size of the molariform teeth, the width of the P4 and the relationship between the length of the palate after M2. Finally, the historical records of P. lotor in Colombia are valid and that the new records corroborate the current distribution in the country and in South America. | eng |
